The very first Epic Poker League Main Event is in the books. Taking place at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, the tournament started on August 9th and finished up on August 12th. 137 people ponied up $20k each to buy-in, and $400,000 was put into the prize pool by the league itself. This meant that first place was $1 million with the total prize pool $3,140,000. You could do a lot of online casino gambling with that money!
The final table was unsurprisingly tough with an incredible 16 WSOP bracelets amongst the players. The final table featured two of the hottest players on the circuit right now in Jason Mercier, a representative of the PokerStars download, and Erik Seidel. Mercier has had an incredible amount of success in live tournaments for a few years now. It can be argued, though, that Seidel is having one of the most impressive years of tournaments the poker world has ever seen. Before the final table Seidel had cashed for $5 million in 2011 so far, including an impressive four outright wins.

Joining Mercier and Seidel at the final table were Huck Seed, Hasan Habib, Chino Rheem, and Gavin Smith. There wasn’t a single elimination for the first five hours of the final table thanks to the deep stacked structure. Finally Seed and Mercier enjoyed a 70bb flip, JJ vs AK all-in preflop. Seed’s hand did not hold and he was consequently eliminated in 6th place.
Next to go was Smith when he got it in with 99 against Mercier’s QQ. Mercier flopped a set which pretty much sealed Smith’s fate. Before long Habib was also eliminated thanks to a cooler: he got dealt JJ preflop but Rheem had AA.
Mercier finally got cold decked, however, and he ended up getting it in preflop with 98 versus the KJ suited of Seidel. Seidel was able to hold and Mercier had to settle for third place. That meant Rheem and Seidel were heads up, and since they both had over 70bb stacks, it meant that it could be a very long battle.
Heads-up lasted under two hours, however. Rheem played aggressively and Seidel found his stack getting lower and lower. The last hand was a cooler as Seidel unfortunately ran AQ into AK. The best hand held up yet again, and Rheem was the champion of the inaugural Epic Poker League event.
Arguably the biggest story of the event was of Seidel, however, because his $604,330 for placing 2nd was smaller than three other cashes he’s had this year. What an amazing year for this man!
